Three steps to a printed page
-
Type one answer and clue per line, like "OWL - It hoots at night".
-
Watch the grid fit itself together. Press Shuffle for a different arrangement.
-
Print the puzzle, with the answer key on its own page.
Writing good clues
The best clues for kids describe what something does or looks like, not its dictionary definition. "It hoots at night" beats "a nocturnal bird of prey". For older students, a sentence with a blank works well: "The ____ of a triangle add up to 180 degrees."
Mix long and short words. Long words give the puzzle its backbone, and short ones fill the gaps where words cross.
When a word will not fit
Every word has to cross at least one other. If a word shares no letters with the rest (it happens with short words like "SKY"), the page tells you which one. Add a word that shares a letter with it, swap it out, or press Shuffle to try other arrangements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words should a crossword have?
Between 8 and 15 works best on one page. Fewer than 6 makes a sparse grid; more than 20 makes the clue list very long.
Can I make it easier for young kids?
Yes. Switch on "List the answers under the puzzle" so they can see the words, and choose short, everyday words.
Does the crossword come with answers?
Yes. The answer key prints on its own page with every word filled in.
