How it works

Three steps to a printed page

  1. Pick music staff or guitar tab.

  2. Choose how many staves per page.

  3. Add a title if you like, then press Print.

How many staves per page?

Twelve staves is standard manuscript paper. Eight to ten gives more room for lyrics or chord names between staves. Beginners and younger students do well with six large staves, where note heads are easy to place on or between lines.

Reading guitar tab

Each of the six lines is a guitar string, with the high E string on top and the low E at the bottom. A number on a line tells you which fret to press on that string. Tab doesn't show rhythm, so it's often written under a music staff or with the song playing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is staff paper?

Paper printed with sets of five lines (staves) for writing music notes. It's also called manuscript paper or blank sheet music.

Which line of guitar tab is the low E string?

The bottom line. Tab is drawn as if you were looking down at the guitar on your lap, so the thinnest string is on top.
